Before I start bubbling about my unfinished thesis, I am quite motivated by some direct comments to me about my blog, that’s why I’m writing again! (After ages of hibernation :p) And I hope I can continually write since I’ve downloaded wordpress app in my blackberry! Woohoo! Say horray to technology! Horray!!
Okay, enough Rya >.<
Stop reading this post if you are not majoring in English Education! I'm afraid that you'll get bored reading this because this post is no fun at all, but go on if you really want to know :p
It took a whole year till finally I finished one step in my thesis, the research. Just finished it this May. (Yes readers, I know, how slow I am. Don't really care, my life, my way! *selfish moment* :p)
At least, it's a great relief that I've passed the hardest part of my thesis, that is, teaching in school. I was an impatient person when dealing with over-active highschool students, but it's quite a challenge tough.
Ummm.. Actually, my research is about using contextual analysis to understand unfamiliar words in reading comprehension. Yes, as simple as that.
So what’s your inspiration Rya? How did you finally decide to choose that problem? *self-asking*
Reading is one of my many hobbies (the best after watching movies and travelling~errr… But I don’t really do much travelling due to financial reason, this is just the hobby-to-be oneday when I have a huge amount of capital of my own, ohh never mind
) that I love till now since the very first time I knew how to read. My parents are so generous in any things in order to give the best education for their children, and because of this, my sisters and I have about hundreds of books of any kinds at home. I love to go to bookstores, buying books and novels, and locking myself in my room to read them, having my ‘silent time’. I didn’t understand many words in English at the time, but it’s really rare that I have a dictionary with me while reading, but I enjoy reading a lot and I always learn new words. How come? Yup, by guessing through the context surrounding the unfamiliar words. I didn’t waste too much time disturbing my enjoyment in reading by opening dictionary for every word that I don’t know (also proved by what’s seen in my observation in the classroom, students almost always depend on dictionary or alfalink while reading texts).
And my research was implementing this strategy to them, letting them to be independent readers without the help of dictionary. My research was not a hundred percent perfect as what I’ve planned, the problems were the students who don’t really like to read and this strategy has to be a habit for them not because they are told to do so. But I’ve tried my hard, I forced them to think and guess, and I hope this strategy will really help them in reading just like how it helped me all this time.
Pray for me readers, I am dying to leave this town soon (after 8 years of being stucked here) with a bachelor degree behind my name. I want to see the world out there. Wish me luck!
Will write again really soon,
Xoxo
